Being a Witness

Gott & Keenan, the judge, and the other lawyers appreciate the demands on your valuable time.  Thus, we will all try to save as much of your time as possible.  If a case goes slowly or if there are delays, please be patient.  Our justice system is a fair one; however, sometimes delays cannot be avoided.  If you have specific scheduling conflicts, notify the attorney who called you as a witness.  We may be able to minimize conflicts by scheduling your appearance at a certain time.  Sometimes, we may want you to be available "on call" rather than waiting in court.  If neither option is available, we will certainly try our best to avoid any inconvenience to you.

Tips for Testifying

The idea of testifying in court may cause you to be a little nervous. That is completely understandable. However, a few helpful hints can provide some guidance:

TELL THE TRUTH

Review the case facts prior to attending court

Dress neatly and professionally for court

Familiarize yourself with the courtroom

Answer questions clearly and loudly

Be polite ("ma'am" and "sir" to attorneys and "your honor" to the judge)

Listen attentively to questions prior to answering

Explain answers if a question cannot be truthfully answered "yes" or "no"

Stop testifying if an attorney makes an objection or if the judge speaks

Be yourself, be relaxed, and be confident -- you are telling the truth

If you have any questions about testifying, talk with the attorney calling you as a witness.

Our office welcomes your questions and wants you to be as comfortable as possible when attending court.
